When my husband and I made the decision that I would become a stay at home wife the next step was figuring out how we would make it work. We ended up searching for ways to make money fast, without me having to leave the home.
We started digging deep into our finances and creating a budget that we could stick to. Not long after, I started searching around for ways that I could make extra money from home to help supplement my husband’s income and since we were already living off of just my husband’s income, we needed ways to make money fast.
We knew that if I wanted to start a small business from the house, now was the time to do so before we have kids running around.
I started searching for things I could do to make an income from home, with no such luck.
There are countless ways to make money from home, but a lot of them turn out to just be scams wanting your money.
After a few months of searching and brainstorming, I did finally come across a few awesome work from home opportunities.
I ended up giving blogging a shot, and I am beyond grateful that I did. But I do realize that blogging isn’t for everyone, it is just one of the many, many ways that you can make an income while staying home with your family.
7 WAYS TO MAKE MONEY FAST
1. SELL YOUR CLUTTER
Start off by decluttering your house. If you don’t know where to begin, you can start by decluttering these 20 simple items from your house.
You can then easily sell the things that you don’t need or use anymore to make some extra money.
Selling your items on eBay or Craigslist is free and super easy to do.
If you think that you don’t have anything you can get rid of out of your house, take the list of 20 things to declutter from your house and start there. I’m willing to bet you will find at least one or two things that you can declutter and get rid of.
2. START AN ETSY STORE
If you’re not sure what you can sell, Etsy breaks it down like this, “You can sell three main types of products on Etsy: handmade goods, vintage items and craft supplies.”
It sounds so limited, but really the things that people sell on Etsy are nearly endless. There seems to be a little bit of everything on that site.
Do you have a skill in creating things? Or do you have a few vintage items lying around that you could sell? Consider listing them on Etsy and making some money from it. You might even be able to create your own business out of selling on Etsy.
When I had just started blogging and was still trying to find different ways to make extra money, I seriously considered starting my own Etsy store.
I love to crochet, and could spend all day crocheting items like dishcloths, baby clothes, toques, mittens and scarves, so I thought selling them on Etsy would be a fantastic idea to make some money doing something that I loved to do.
Since then I’ve put my heart and soul into this blog and just haven’t had that much time to crochet anymore, so starting an Etsy store to sell my crocheting isn’t an option at the moment.
But I think for anyone who enjoys and has a skill in creating stuff, Etsy is a great way to turn that hobby into a money making side-hustle or business.
3. BECOME A USER TESTER
User testing has to be one of the easier ways to earn an income.
Sites like UserTesting pay you to visit a website (or app) and either complete a certain task or search around the site to assess user-friendliness, then document your thoughts and opinions and get paid. It’s as simple as that.
4. BECOME A MYSTERY SHOPPER
Mystery shopping requires you to perform a specific task then to provide the company with a detailed report of your experience.
The tasks that you are asked to perform could include asking questions, purchasing a product, calling the store, or filing a complaint.
Companies all over the place are regularly searching for mystery shoppers. To find companies in your area simply search online “mystery shopping + your location”.
5. CLEAN HOUSES
Cleaning houses is a fantastic way to earn some quick cash. To start your business you can post it on a local buy and sell, in the newspaper, or spread the news by word of mouth.
If your clients are pleased with your work they will most likely tell their friends, and you could have a small business started up in no time.
The great part of cleaning houses is there is minimal upfront cost, you just need the usual cleaners, a vacuum, and some rags.
You get to choose your own days and hours that you work, and you get to choose which houses you take on, and if there’s a house you’re not comfortable taking on, you can say no.
6. SHOP AT THRIFT STORES AND RESELL
Buy things like name brand clothes that are still in great shape or home decor that just needs a bit of TLC for cheap from your local thrift stores then resell them on a buy and sell, eBay, Craigslist, or even Etsy.
Clothing would be the easiest to thrift and resell, but getting into the furniture end of things would give you a bigger return of investment. If you have an eye for home decor and enjoy finishing and refurbishing furniture, this could be a great way for you to use your spare time to make some extra money.
7. START AN IN-HOME DAYCARE
If you already have kids and stay home with them, adding a few more kids to the bunch would be a relatively easy way to make some money while doing what you do anyway.
If you spend the days at home with your kids, let some other working moms in your area know that you are willing to babysit their kids for them while they are at work.
If you offer rates lower than daycare prices, I’m sure that these moms will be ready to jump at your offer. Daycare prices seem to be skyrocketing lately, and showing no sign of slowing down.
Offer to take care of a couple more kids at a cheaper price than sending them to daycare, and you won’t only be doing yourself a favor by making extra money from home, but you’ll also be helping out the other working moms and dads out there who are struggling to keep up with daycare bills.
