Rather than getting paralyzed by the mess, follow this simple three-step plan: 

Step 1: Declutter

What is clutter? 

The short answer is anything that you don’t use, need, or love

So, why do you hold on to these items? A lot of reasons can make us think twice about getting rid of old things. You might be saying to yourself: 

  • Am I wasteful?  
  • What if I end up needing this? 
  • But this item brings precious memories… 

You’re not alone. We all experience mental barriers to decluttering, which lead to procrastinating or abandoning the task altogether. To enjoy the benefits of being organized, you need a strategy to overcome these barriers. 

Here’s how to convince yourself to finally get it done: 

  • Visualize your clean space. Imagine how much happier and more peaceful you’d feel in it. Keep this mental image as you declutter to remind you why you got started and motivate you to keep going. 
  • Play some music you love. I usually avoid podcasts or putting on the TV in the background, as it can distract me from the task I’m working on. Instead, I like to put on some fun feel-good music to keep me energized and boost my mood. 
  • Take everything out. Often, we don’t realize how much clutter we’ve gathered until we see it all in one place. Empty the room (or space) to make sure you tackle all the mess. 
  • Don’t spend too much time. Try not to take more than half a minute per item. If you’re still unsure, chances are it’s better to toss it. 
  • Donate. By donating gently-used items, you’re helping a charitable cause and reducing your guilt about throwing things away. 
  • Take pictures. If you’re holding onto broken, bulky, or useless items for the memories they bring, consider taking a photo instead. You won’t forget special moments just because you no longer have a physical reminder.

Go back to your vision for the space. Now that you’ve taken out all the clutter take another look and consider how you want it organized.
