Don’t feel pressured, blogging is not for everyone. It’s hard work. It’s hard work that can get very discouraging when you don’t see any return from it. But if you stick with it, you’ll get somewhere, it just takes time, consistency, and a willingness to give it your all.
You might just want some extra money to complement your income, or you might be wanting to start a blog in hopes of being able to quit your job and work completely from home.
Your dream is not unrealistic, and I’m here to tell you it is possible.
I knew nothing about blogging before I started my own blog. I was an avid blog reader, but I didn’t have a clue where to start when I made mine. I was so confused and didn’t understand any of the fancy blogger jargon. But I am so glad that I leapt in and went for it, it has been an incredible journey filled with ups and downs, and I’m still only starting.
I am so excited for what blogging will do for you, too. Don’t regret not taking the leap.

4 Easy Steps to Start a Successful Blog Today
1. CHOOSE YOUR UNIQUE DOMAIN NAME
Your domain name is the address of your blog and will look like this: www.example.com
This is the step that took me the longest. I was stumped when it came to choosing a name. I had a few ideas of what I wanted but I didn’t really love any of them.
Don’t settle with a name that you don’t love. If it takes you a few days or weeks to think of the perfect name for your new blog, take the time and don’t rush into something that you’re not absolutely sure of.
But, don’t let not being sure of a name stop you from creating a blog, because it is possible to move your current blog to a new name in the future if you think of a better one.
When you are choosing your unique domain name try to keep it simple. Simple and easy to remember is what you want so that people can easily remember what your blog is called if they visited it a time or two and are trying to find it again.
If you choose something long and extravagant for your domain name it can be difficult for your readers to remember it.
If you have a specific niche that you want to write about and want to base your domain name off of that, really think about it before you do it as it will trap your blog to a certain niche, when after blogging for a little while you might find that other topics do better on your blog and want write about those.
Your name is another option for a domain name (www.yourname.com), this keeps it simple and doesn’t lock your blog into a niche.
2. CHOOSE YOUR HOSTING PLAN
If you’re wondering why you need a self-hosted site rather than a hosted (free) site, the answer is, if you want to have a professional looking blog and make money off of it, you need to be self-hosted.
If you sign up for a free hosted site with WordPress.com, your domain name will look like this: www.example.wordpress.com whereas if you sign up with a self-hosted site your domain name will look like this: www.example.com (a self-hosted domain name looks clean and much more professional).
You need to own your blog. When you sign up for a free blog, even if you’ve been blogging on there for months, your blog can be shut down at any time with no warning or explanation, and you could lose all of your work.
Blog hosting is like renting a space on the internet for your blog. It’s where your blog will live.
Now that you have decided on a rockin’ good name for your blog, it’s time to choose a hosting plan.
I originally went with Bluehost as I did a bit of research and I found that they were the most broadly recommended host out there. Now that I have been blogging for a while I am hearing more and more about people using and highly recommending Siteground.
** UPDATE – I SWITCHED TO SITEGROUND AND HAVE BEEN MUCH HAPPIER WITH THEIR SERVICE.
Siteground offers a 30-day money back guarantee, so you can try it completely risk-free, and cancel your account if you’re not happy with their services.
Siteground also offers 1-click WordPress.org installation. Yes! That is exactly what I needed, because I tried to install WordPress.org by myself, and I didn’t have a clue what was going on. So if you’re like me and not tech savvy at all, then this is a huge bonus!
When you’ve done all your research and are confident with which hosting platform you want to go with,
Click here for Siteground (click here for the special price of only $3.95/month, regularly $9.95/month)
And they will walk you through the startup process. If you need more details to help you through the startup process you can use the chat to talk with a worker and they will help you through the whole process.

3. LOG INTO YOUR NEW SITE AND GET COMFORTABLE
Now that your blog is created it’s time to learn your way around it.
When I first started blogging I signed up with a free account on WordPress.com and got used to the way things were laid out there.
Then not long after getting used to that, I took the plunge (if I could go back knowing what I know now, I would have started off with hosting in the first place) and invested in hosting for my blog, and then I had to learn everything all over again because it was all so different.
When I logged onto my new site I was so lost. But, after clicking around for awhile I started to get the hang of it.
So go ahead, log on, click around and get used to your new site and dashboard.
4. CHOOSE A THEME
Now is the fun part! You get to choose a theme and set up your blog to reflect who you are. There are TONS of themes, some free and some that you have to pay for. Choose one that you love and get started playing around with fonts, colors, layouts, and everything else until your blog feels right.
The theme I use and LOVE (it doesn’t require coding since everything is drag and drop) is Elegant Theme’s Extra theme, which you can find here.
Congratulations! You have your very own blog! Now it’s time to start creating your awesome content and getting it out to the world.
