How to Persevere When Your Situation Looks Hopeless
There are times that your situation looks and feels just hopeless. I don’t think anyone can deny that.
It may feel like you’ve been crying out to God for days, months, or even years, with the feeling that your cries and prayers are just bouncing off the roof and everything you want so badly to be released from falls right back onto your very shoulders. It’s those times of hopelessness that you can’t lose hope. Keep fighting the good fight, even if you don’t see any result coming from your labouring keep pressing on. Keep hoping, keep believing, keep striving for that which you have been called heavenward by Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).
You may think you’re all alone in your despair, but you are not. The devil works in sneaky ways, trying to make you feel desperate, like you’re at the end of your rope and all alone. He is trying to make you lose Faith. Stand strong my friend! Let’s take a look and see what the Bible says about hopelessness.
Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off. – Proverbs 23:18
Your hope will not be cut off. What a promise! Hopelessness is the devil’s way of trying to get under your skin and make you give up, make you lose your faith. But look at this verse and see the Lord’s promise of a future for you.
For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakeness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. – Romans 8:24-26
Keep hoping for the things unseen, wait in patience.
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
That has got to be one of my favourite verses. There is so much power and hope compact into those short few lines. Though it may feel hopeless, it may even feel like your outer self is wasting away, but this is just preparing you.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. – Hebrews 11:1
“Faith is a settled confidence that something in the future – something that God has promised – will actually happen because God will make it happen.” – excerpt from my ESV Study Bible
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8
The Lord promises to go before you and go with you. He promises His children He will never leave them and never forsake them.
Let’s end with this to hope for and look forward to:
Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonour they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy. – Isaiah 61:7
Everlasting joy. Let that promise be what carries you through the times of hopelessness into a life of everlasting joy.
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Romans 12:12
